Bought this to replace an old water that had seen better days. After setting this one up, our water became clearer and the stains started disappearing from our toilets. This uses much less salt than our old softener that had 3 regen days a week. And the water has gotten that soft feeling without feeling slimy. I had no problem hooking up the softener or the WIFI. All in all this seems to do what it's supposed to do and I look forward to many years of service.

All WiFi features do not work. It will tell you how many days till you need to add salt. It will tell you how much water you used per day. It will not close the electronic ball valve. Good thing I checked before installing the ball valve in line on the main water line. This valve and feature is designed to let you turn off the main water line from the App if you develop a water leak in your house. The feature does not close the electronic ball valve.

This is one of the best Softeners. I recently changed my older version of GE to this very smart one. Now I don't worry about any leaks and not only I can see my water usage on my cell phone I can shout off the water remotely.

Stopped by my local home depot one night with the wife. Stopped by this water softener, and thought it looked pretty cool. So we decided to take this bad boy home, and had our local plumbing company come install it. So far the unit has worked out great. My wifes dandruff is gone because of this unit. So now I no longer have to deal with her seasonal snow flakes.

I installed the GE GXSHC40N water softener myself. Installation was extremely easy. I've had it running for 3 weeks and it has definitely made a huge difference in the water quality. We no longer get any mineral build up or rust stains like we used to. I'd give it 5 stars if the "Smart" features were a little better. The "smart " app is quite limited in what you can actually control and monitor. If you don't need/care about this, GE sells an identical "non-smart" version for about $100 less.
We have a lot of sediment in our well water, so I installed a 100-micron spin-down pre-filter, then the water softener, and finally followed by a 25-micron and then 5-micron cartridge filters complete with bypass valves at every stage. Water in our house has never been better.

Install it was quite easy. I did it myself along with a 4 stage filter prior to the softener.
As for installing the softener, all I needed was a male 1 inch nipple for the automated shutoff valve, the blue device on the inlet for the install. I used sharkbite 1 inch hoses for both in and outs to the house as well but that's optional. Set up was a breeze as I just followed instructions in the manual.
Setting the hardness is about the toughest part and will take time as you can adjust the hardness from 1-125. I started at 100 and went down about 12 times and is currently sitting at 43. Higher you set it, the oily feeling is more apparent and you will regen every night which uses a lot of water, 37 gallons and some salt. I need to have my water tested.
I seldom use the smart feature now as I've been in my garage working on many projects and have been able to just walk up and go through the settings.
Love it so far and would recommend. Definitely saves space compared to normal softeners with a separate brine tub and tank

We noticed the difference within a couple of days and what a difference it makes, drinking water tastes much better not to mention showers! The only downside is the the app GR uses SmartHQ, terrible app, does not work properly, too many glitches, absolutely horrible.

I'm no water softener expert. I'm a pretty handy guy and installed this myself. I went to Home Depot intending to purchase a different model, but this was all they had. Thinking itd be nice to have access vía wifi to the device, I bought it. Set up was easy enough. It came with an electronic water shut off valve, but frustratingly did not come with anything to connect it to. You'll have to purchase a separate 1" x 3" long (Male on both ends) nipple if you want to take advantage of the valve.
As for the app, it's mostly not very useful. You can see your water usage over time, and shut off the water valve. You can receive a low salt and flow issue notifications as well. You are not able to adjust your hardness levels or initial or schedule recharge.
After initial setup, getting the hardness setting correct was difficult without actually testing the water with a hardness test, so to be able to adjust this from the app would be nice.

So so, poor install instructions, but I am handy and figured it out, for almost anyone without ever having done any plumbing of anykind, impossible.
Wifi does not work as of yet, so it does not I would revert to two stars.
Water quality will take a while to see.

Installing the soft water maker was the best idea we ever did for the house, the water is super clear now and you can tell that the soft water maker is working, i really like the large pellet capacity so no need to fill up with salt all the time, it looks clean not bulky and the wifi ability to monitor it is a very nice feature.

This water softener is awesome. The water at my home is full of sediment and is extremely hard. This product has completely changed my shower!!
It says the app wont shut the valve off automatically but can connect to my smarthome hub which can handle the command to shut it off in the event of water being detected on the floor.

Relatively easy to set up and straight-forward wifi/app config (assuming you've done wifi setup for other appliances/devices) - took me all of 20 minutes once the plumbing was done, to fill it with salt, go through the setup, and kick off the first recharge. I'd expect a few more features from the app (history/logging of usage and recharges), but it is helpful when you're away from home to give you insight into what your plumbing is doing (i.e. shows water usage for the day, valve status (if you use it) and estimates how many days of salt are left). Water softener itself seems pretty solid physically and has been 100% reliable - so much so that I haven't even given it much thought. I have extremely hard water (35-41 grains) and it does a great job - not sure what it is after the softener, but no noticeable scaling, water tastes much better (and not salty), and isn't overly "slippery".

The fact that this is an all-in-one device with everything in a simple package makes this a very easy setup. Highly recommend PTFE paste for the threaded connections - it will stop any annoying leaks that you might otherwise have. WiFi connectivity with remote shutoff valve is a nice peace of mind feature too.

Unit is quiet, softens the water as expected. I have the electronic shut off connected. I also have the app that tells me how many gallons of water i use daily . I can see if the water is flowing even when I'm at work and it reminds me when salt is needed. I turned it against the wall to save space.

So far no issues with the softener. I paid the extra money for one that was accessible from my phone because I travel for work. The app is worthless, the only thing it tells you is how much water it uses in a day and how much salt is in the tank, you cannot adjust any of the settings. It does have an emergency shut off but I can get that from ring.

Softens water well and could feel the difference within 1-2 days. Checked the hardness level and see that it lowered the hardness level from very hard to soft. I like the app which allows me to check water usage and flow. Would have been better if it was a tad bit slimmer due to my garage space which was one of the strong factor of considering this model in the first place.

Great product that was easy to install and setup. Uses half as much floor space as my last water softener. Inly complaint has to deal with the app. Constantly shows I have no internet connection even though I was able to connect with the softener and am on WiFi.
